Netflix’s ‘Resident Evil’: ‘Supernatural’ Comparisons, Game Ties

Anyone who has ever seen Supernatural knows that the unbreakable bond of Sam and Dean Winchester was the heart of that series. The brothers didn’t always get along, but they still fought tooth and nail for each other, no matter the consequences.

from netflix Resident Evil The series, which arrives this Thursday, is also based on a complicated sibling dynamic with Jade and Billie Wesker, the twin daughters of manic scientist Albert Wesker (played by the forest‘s Lance Reddick), at the forefront of the story. Showrunner Andrew Dabb (who previously served as showrunner for Supernatural) recognizes that the twins’ relationship shares some similarities with the Winchesters: “They’re both going through these very traumatic events together,” but notes that their dynamic is also very different.

“When you have an older brother or a younger brother, one of them is a kind of surrogate parent. With twins, you’re on a level playing field,” Dabb tells TVLine. “The power struggle is even more dynamic because one day it’s the twin and another day it’s the other twin, but age doesn’t really matter.”

Dabb adds that “it was very important to me, when we started talking about demonic residentto delve into what demonic resident is actually all about. If you dig into the monsters and the zombies and the crazy stuff, it’s all about family. Whether you’re talking about the Redfields, Albert Wesker’s very eccentric family, or the Birkins, there’s a really solid family foundation for demonic resident. Obviously, I was a fan of the games and the movies, but once I sat down and really thought about it, I was like, ‘Oh, I get how to make these characters feel real, as opposed to making them feel like characters in an apocalypse. .’”

Netflix's Resident EvilThe series takes place in two different timelines: 2022, during which Albert and his daughters have just moved to New Raccoon City while he develops a drug called Joy, and 2036, 14 years after that drug containing the T-virus will devastate the city. planet and turned most of its inhabitants into zombies. In eight-hour-long episodes, the show mostly sticks to its own contained story, but still acknowledges previously released video games (including 2021’s). Resident Evil Village) as canon.

“All the games that have come out today, [from] the first game to Village, they are the backstory of our show,” explains Dabb. “So Raccoon City was bombed. In Eastern Europe, there was a giant vampire lady [aka Lady Dimitrescu]. That’s all in our world.”

But as games go one way, the show will go another way “because we’re producing, hopefully, a show every 18 months or so, and games take a little longer to start production… We made the decision.” [in Season 1] just touching the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the lore of the game. If we’re lucky enough to get into Season 2 and beyond, you’ll start to see a lot more gameplay elements on the show.”

When it comes to demonic residentDabb’s longevity points to the big time. “My last show was 15 seasons long, so I think this one should be at least 16,” she jokes.

But seriously, the showrunner has mapped out a beginning, a middle, and an end to the story. “Whether it’s two seasons, three seasons, four seasons or five seasons, we’ll let the audience tell us,” he shares. “I will say that the further we go, the more story we find as we incorporate more elements from the games and expand these worlds and these characters.”
