Resident Evil Establishes Puzzle Box Mystery In 8 New Photos

There are certain elements that have come to define the demonic resident video game. Horror, of course. Sometimes absurd terror. andres dabbthe showrunner who uses these games as inspiration for his next live-action Netflix series, recites some of what makes them so hype: “People have lost limbs and come back. I think they’ve all been cloned at this point, but some of it is just really funny.”

Beneath that level of debauchery is always some kind of puzzle box mystery to solve. That is also true of demonic resident, the live action series. Dabb hopes the show, which hits Netflix on July 14, will feel like they’ve taken “all the games and mixed them up.” Sure, he’ll be “aggressively R-rated” at times, he promises, but there’s a compelling puzzle mystery tied together in two timelines. And it starts with Jade Wesker.

ahead of the latest demonic resident Reveal of the trailer, which will arrive this Monday during Netflix’s Geeked Week events, EW got eight exclusive photos.

Dabb and his writers room didn’t set out to adapt one demonic resident game specifically. Instead, they treated the events and mythology of all the games as if they were the backstory of their show to launch a new story for the franchise. That story begins with the introduction of a fresh-faced heroine: Charlie’s Angels star she balinska as the daughter of Albert Wesker.

As an adult, Jade operates in London in the year 2036, 14 years after a global pandemic, caused by the dangerous T-Virus, transformed those infected into monsters. It’s a time when humanity has reached “a tense standstill with the zombie apocalypse,” Dabb tells EW. “They have managed to forge a certain civilization. People have lives. They may not be the lives they had before. In fact, I can guarantee they are not.”

In the first episode, directed by Bronwen Hughes, Jade is someone very haunted by her past. She has a husband, Arj (Ahad Raza Mir), at home with her son, but she is consumed with the idea that she can somehow fix things. “The thing that came to me very quickly was that she’s like Jane Goodall to zombies,” says Dabb. “She is studying them. She is trying to learn how they work. This is a new organism. It evolves and has its own agenda.”

Using a mix from author Alan Weisman’s book the world without us and the movie child of man, production designer James Foster envisioned a futuristic version of London overrun by nature, as humanity’s footprint has all but vanished. Threats now include hordes of infected and also the occasional kaiju-sized mutated caterpillar.

So how did humanity get to this point? Well, that’s part of the puzzle that Dabb is talking about. demonic resident it feels like two different, but complementary shows, united. One takes place in the setting of 2036 and the other dates back to the year 2022, when a young Jade (played by Tamara Smart) moves to New Raccoon City in South Africa with her sister Billie (Siena Agudong) and her father. Albert Wesker (lance reddick).

For those keeping track of where we are at this point in the timeline of the demonic resident games, this is when the events of the last inning, Resident Evil: Town, occur. Dabb sets the stage: “We’re now essentially over 20 years from the first Raccoon City. Everyone knows it was destroyed in a very tragic incident, but very few people know exactly what happened, which makes sense given it was a bit of a a cover-up in the United States government”.

NETFLIX Lance Reddick and Paola Nuñez play Albert Wesker and Evelyn Marcus in Netflix’s ‘Resident Evil’.

The nefarious Umbrella Corporation, the one that experimented with the T-Virus and bioterrorism that created the zombified monsters in the first place, has now been reinvented by new CEO Evelyn Marcus (Paola Nuñez), daughter of Umbrella founder and virologist James Marcus. . She is not a character that exists in the games, though Dabb notes, “There are some indications that she couldif you dig deep enough.”

Since the bioweapons lead didn’t work out in Umbrella’s favor, Evelyn has shifted her focus to consumer products, specifically a drug called Joy. This miracle drug is designed to cure various forms of mental ailments, from depression to OCD. But patients should read the fine print, because the T virus is included in the side effects. Dabb says that one should not assume that Joy is the sole cause of the zombie outbreak taking over the world. It’s just one piece of the puzzle. “As we’ll talk about on the show, you’d have to take a lot of Joy to turn into a zombie. Much“, he comments. “But whenever you’re messing with the T-Virus, it usually never works out.”

Other pieces of the puzzle include the presence of Wesker, who died during the events of the game. (Dabb previously teased how that plays out on the show..) Jade and Billie clearly have something to do with it too. Previous trailers have shown that Wesker keeps vials of his blood in his lab. For what purpose? Dabb can’t tell yet.

NETFLIX A staple of the ‘Resident Evil’ franchise, a Doberman pinstripe infected with the T-Virus stares at Jade and Billie in the live-action Netflix series.

This younger version of Jade almost feels like a different character than the woman she was forced to become at just 14 years old. However, viewers will ultimately feel echoes in Balinska and Smart’s performances as demonic resident he comes and goes in time to develop his story. Smart would come to set days off for him early in production to take note of Balinska’s work, and vice versa.

“Young Jade is young mansays Dabb. “Jade is sarcastic and forceful, but at the same time, deep down, she’s a very serious person in a crisis. Because of how she was raised, she put up a lot of walls. Jade is someone who walks in armor.”

Before these sisters are drawn into the horrors of Umbrella, they face the horrors of high school in New Raccoon City. As newcomers to town, they are placed with other teenagers, such as Simon (Connor Gosatti), whose parents live in Umbrella. Simon has lived in Umbrella housing all his life with no knowledge of the true nature of the company, but as soon as he realizes what’s going on, he teams up with Jade and Billie to get to the bottom of it.

NETFLIX Siena Agudong plays Billie Wesker in Netflix’s ‘Resident Evil’.

Unlike Jade, Billie is more vulnerable to the dangers of teenage social life. “You have a character who is really caring and maybe a little less direct than her sister, but also someone who is struggling with some of her own demons. This is a character who cares deeply about people and animals. she’s vegan and someone who supports PETA. She’s the kind of person who doesn’t step on an ant. She walks it outside.”

A photo of demonic resident shows Billie interacting with a caterpillar. Is this the same caterpillar that later turns into the gigantic caterpillar that attacks Jade in 2036? Dabb says it could be, but at least it’s meant to be a fun visual link between the two timelines.

“The hope is that they build, one from the other,” Dabb explains of the two scenarios. “The idea is that you’ll see things in the future story. You’re like, ‘Wait! How did that happen?’ And then that episode, or a couple of episodes later, you’ll get the answer. Somehow, future history itself is a mystery. How did people get here? How did these relationships change? And it’s all explained, but it’s explained in a way that we’ve pieced it together. If you’re watching it, you’ll be able to see how all the threads start to intertwine as we go through the story.”
