Fireflies are missing in Minecraft 1.19 (2022)
We’ve covered the full story of Minecraft fireflies, so use the table below to explore each section. You’ll find out when this new mob was announced, when it was supposed to arrive, and much more.
What are fireflies in Minecraft?
First announced during minecraft live 2021, fireflies were supposed to be part of the Minecraft 1.19 update. The developers intended for them to spawn in the new mangrove biome alongside the frogs in Minecraft. If the game is presented to them on time, would have been food for frogs and possibly a mechanic to create froglight.
Other than that, due to their shiny design and body, they would have also made a great aesthetic mob for the night. Design-wise, the fireflies were literally two square particles, making them the The smallest mob ever planned for Minecraft.
Are fireflies part of the Minecraft 1.19 update?
Unfortunately, in the Ask Mojang 2022 video, the developers recently confirmed that the fireflies will not be added to the game with minecraft 1.19 to update. They have scrapped the idea of this unique mob for an indefinite period. And in a strange irony, it’s due to community feedback. Find out why the fireflies were canceled in the next section.
Why did Minecraft remove fireflies?
The main purpose of the fireflies was to act as food for the frogs. But several players pointed out that some species of fireflies are poisonous to frogs. Despite the fact that they are only poisonous to a few species of frogs in the real world, it was enough for the developers to stop the implementation of fireflies in the game. With no purpose to serve, the developers decided it’s better to remove the fireflies entirely rather than add them for aesthetics alone.
Do Minecraft players want fireflies?
We believe that the developers’ decision to remove fireflies was made with good intentions. But the community is not so happy with its total removal. The food element aside, the fireflies could have opened up a route for more bugs in the game. They would also have made the swamp biomes much more attractive at night.
We can further imagine its high potential with the best Minecraft shaders. As mentioned above, fireflies still have aesthetic value to them. So even if we don’t get them as a mob, the developers should still add fireflies as a particle effect. We already have particle effects in the Nether dimension. So getting them in a slightly improved way in the swamp biomes won’t be surprising.
When will the fireflies come out?
As Youtuber cubfan135 tweeted, Minecraft has a flawed history of not adding promised features if they don’t finish them on time. With the current trend, fireflies could end up on that list. But all hope is not lost yet.
A few years ago, Minecraft planned to add a Piglin brute mob for the Nether update. But this mob was not ready at the time of the update release so they added it in a minor update. Seeing the demand for fireflies and their simple mechanics, we could get them in versions 1.19.1 or 1.19.2. However, please note that there are no official commitments for now.
