We’re not sure who asked for a giant LEGO Minecraft llama, but 21188 The Llama Village is just that, and not much more.
21188 The Llama Village is about what you’d expect given the name, consisting of a surprisingly large llama built out of bricks and a variety of additional constructions that make up part of the village set. Since being added to Minecraft in update 1.11, these creatures have received several changes in the most recent updates, including the option to add a fleece coat in a variety of colors.
It is the blue version of these trading llamas that provides the inspiration for 21188 The Llama Village, sure to be a must-have LEGO Minecraft model for llama enthusiasts. However, it can be a bit strange for those who are not used to the giant animal builds that the team on this theme loves so much.

The vast majority of the bricks in this set go towards the massive llama model, though the village section doesn’t fall short on content either, including a small farm, a covered corral, a trading area, a blacksmith shop, and a water well.
None of these individual assemblages can compare to the sheer size of the towering llama, as its minimalist details and scale serve to emphasize the size of the llama. On their own, they don’t make up much of a town, but they are designed to support the main attraction. However, that also means you have to like llamas more than most for 21188 The Llama Village to appeal to you.
Moving on to the llama itself, it can’t be understated how large it is when built, as half of each leg is left unbuilt and the number of parts goes into the rest of the model, without interfering with the structural integrity or the llama aspect This also makes it much easier to reconfigure the model into a smaller animal-based mansion.
The details on the exterior of the flame include some sections that maintain the style of the commercial flame design. An example of this is the balcony on either side, which looks like a chest that can be equipped on the animals in the game, but with a hint of blue and yellow on top to match the color scheme. It is evident that a lot of thought has gone into this build and at no point during the build did it feel repetitive.
There are several fun details on the exterior of the llama, like a spitting feature that’s nearly invisible when viewed from most angles. The ammo is camouflaged on top of the head and fits neatly into the slot provided, meaning you won’t have to worry about storing an extra water block somewhere on the model.
When you open the flame, the interior is fully accessible and has room for two minifigures to live. The usual artistic freedom is taken with the furniture, but it makes the furniture more interesting, especially the aquarium in the neck – every space in this flame is used to the fullest. The top of the model also features plenty of space to display additional builds, minifigures, or whatever else you have in mind. It’s simple, but that’s the point.
As well designed as this llama is, there is still one glaring problem with most of this set: most of the piece count goes into the huge animal recreation. There isn’t much of a village despite the established name of 21188 The Llama Village, but an effort is still being made to create one. Each element of the model works well together, with the smaller sections of the town serving to make the llama appear grander and larger than it already is.
However, you simply cannot escape the fact that this build is still so extremely specific and weird to the point that only those who love Minecraft llamas will benefit from adding it to their collection. Anyone else who simply wants to expand or create a village has better options available within LEGO Minecraft.
Even the minifigures focus intensely on the llama, with the llama herder, llama knight, savannah villager, blacksmith villager and two raiders. Add to that the llama, the baby llama and the pink lamb and you have a very nice variety of characters made up of more rare or exclusive figures for LEGO Minecraft.
As much as the llama warrior echoes the animal theme of the set, the armored character is equally applicable to other settings and the purple provides a nice pop of color that pairs well with the metallic design.
Two villagers feel good considering the size of the village section in the set, although an expansion for them, and the building part, would still have been appreciated. However, that may have been out of the realm of possibility with the scale the LEGO Minecraft team chose for the llama.
One annoying aspect of this set is that the blue-furred trader llama the build is based on, which appears in 21167 The Trading Post, doesn’t reappear here where it would make too much sense. We provide images of the figure next to the model for comparison, but note that only one white baby llama and one brown llama appear in 21188 The Llama Village.
The price of 21188 The Llama Village is by no means outrageous – the size of the build you’re getting for what you’re spending is well worth it, but 21188 The Llama Village is much more ‘llama’ than ‘village’, and any value What you might be looking for in this set entirely depends on how much you love the Minecraft animal.
Those looking for an expansion or the start of a village for their LEGO Minecraft collection would do better to get less expensive minifigures and model sets like 21160 The Illager Raid or 21187 The Red Barn. However, anyone looking for a tribute to the llamas will find exactly what they’re looking for at 21188 The Llama Village.
For a LEGO Minecraft set called 21188 The Llama Village, it might have been better called just The Llama, considering one aspect of that name takes precedence over the other. That’s not necessarily a bad thing, as the flame itself is very well executed, including plenty of detail to appreciate in a sizeable model.
However, it ultimately means this model will have a more limited audience than other Minecraft games, as a huge brick-built llama with a hefty price tag of £114.99/$129.99/€129.99 will primarily appeal to those with an affinity for it. by the animal or have been diligently collecting the recreations of animals in the theme.
21188 The Village of Llamas is a great set, you just have to like llamas more than the average person. Those hoping for a village expansion are better served elsewhere in LEGO Minecraft.
