A classic staple of farms in the media is the simple red barn, but such a structure has never before been depicted in System LEGO sets, at least not until this Minecraft 2022 summer set. While DUPLO has released more than A few red barns over the years, minifigure-scale farms don’t officially have one, and even this summer’s CITY farm sets fail to pull off that classic red-walled color scheme.
21187 The Red Barn accomplishes something no other LEGO Minecraft set has yet, featuring a build that can fit into farms beyond theme with few minor modifications, though this lovely model comes with a hefty price tag.

Using nearly 800 items, the majority of 21187 The Red Barn’s piece count goes into the barn itself, and to great effect. You just can’t go wrong with the classic white and red color scheme the model uses, with fences and walls filling in the necessary spaces without feeling out of place. Unlike other LEGO Minecraft games, there isn’t a particularly bad angle from which to look at this build, though you’ll want to see it with the patches of grass in front of you.
The curved but block-based roof of 21187 The Red Barn has a surprisingly solid structure and immediately catches your eye, as curves are not a typical inclusion in LEGO Minecraft. The natural shape of the roof, within the design constraints of Minecraft, still allows it to sit alongside other LEGO farming models without feeling too out of place (and a few simple slopes will give it even more life).
Unfortunately, the outdoor farming space in 21187 The Red Barn is lackluster, to say the least, with room to plant just six crops and a pen for animals to roam. You could let the included animals roam free, although that tactic is not recommended. It is not recommended in the open world of Minecraft. Potatoes can instantly grow with the twist of a handle, making this an especially fun feature, even when bonemeal isn’t included.
Considering the cost of 21187 The Red Barn, enough additional pieces to wrap the grassy area from the front to the side of the building would have been greatly appreciated. The barn itself is collapsible, with a Technic cross-axle ensuring it stays securely closed when not in use. This little feature will come in handy for those who move the game frequently, or even just from tabletop to shelf after build.
Inside the barn, you will find enough space for two animals, an area to work, a place to store items in the improved and more accurate chest, and a place to live. All of this helps make the barn feel like a home for your Minecraft minifigures, rather than just the animals. The dollhouse-like nature of the model lends itself well to creation play, and the roof design ensures there’s more than enough room for even a sunhat-wearing villager to stand up.
Two minifigures are included in 21187 The Red Barn, although most of the featured characters are animals, which fits with the farming aspect of the model. As for the traditional Minecraft minifigures, the rancher and jungle villager use new designs, as well as a new brick for a sun hat, ready to equip on a LEGO Minecraft head in the same way as a traditional helmet.
This new piece may seem unusual, but you can be sure it’s from the Minecraft base game, as all farmers come equipped with one to protect themselves from the sun. Of course, the beauty of LEGO Minecraft means that it can be used by any of the minifigures, including those with a slightly smaller undead head.
In addition to these two minifigures, there are also brick-built figures of a cow, calf, horse, chicken, baby zombie and the new goat. This wide selection of animals and enemies adds to the value of 21187 The Red Barn, with Baby Zombie, Horse, Goat, and Chicken all featuring specialized items.
The goat is new for the 2022 summer wave after being added to the game almost a year ago on June 8, 2021. The inclusion of an angled head provides fun posing opportunities as they launch minifigures into the sky.
Unfortunately, £89.99 / $99.99 / €99.99 feels too high for 21187 The Red Barn, given the relatively small ground it covers at the base. If it had been a little cheaper, it would have been much easier to recommend it. As it stands, you won’t be too disappointed in 21187 The Red Barn for the asking price, let alone if you find it on sale, but a little more space for a farm with relatively few items would have made the price high. label much more understandable.
