LEGO Minecraft 21186 The Ice Castle gets anything but an icy reception, thanks to an interesting build that offers great value within the video game theme.
The Ice Spikes biome in Minecraft presents an interesting challenge to players, with tall spiers of ice jutting out of mountains and hills and reaching into the sky. For some, this may serve as inspiration for a new build and it appears that the LEGO Minecraft design team has some experience transforming this unique biome into a home.
21187 The Ice Castle stands as an example of what can be achieved with LEGO bricks and within Minecraft, paying close attention to the game’s design guidelines. However, it is not the most remarkable construction in any sense.

The box art for 21186 The Ice Castle makes it clear that the set is based on the Ice Spikes biome, and elements of these natural frozen structures can still be seen on the base, adding a good amount of color to the model. like bright blue. of the ice blends well with the brown of the wooden fences and the white of the snow.
A mixed but consistent color scheme on the ice castle’s exterior helps it stand out, even in a wave full of bright red barns and giant llamas. Keeping to the exterior of the castle, the stone walls are used as parapets and we appreciate the inclusion of mosaics next to the dispensers to show that the walls are connected to them, but not the stairs, in both towers, as in the match. .
The open space in front of the castle also acts as a good place to display the minifigures in battle, and uses a minimal amount of items to achieve this without unnecessarily increasing the price.
Inside the frozen fortress, four glazed terracottas arranged in a circular pattern introduce the purple color of the floor, giving the interior a majestic and powerful presence alongside the throne in the center of the room. That throne also includes a small drop on the back to ensure that the chest, which uses a new item to (finally) accurately represent the block, can be opened without needing to be moved.
The various tools and crafting stations lining the interior wall don’t fill all the available space, though anyone with more than a few Minecraft models might appreciate the spare room.
The use of the two curved tiles fitted within two pairs of studs to represent a flowerbed is interesting, considering that such a technique was previously considered ‘illegal’. Whether this will damage bricks over time is yet to be seen, although it is officially described as such in the instructions and appears to be stable at the time of writing.
The highlight of the structure comes in the form of those four printed glazed terracotta tiles, though other than that there isn’t much else to write home about. That’s not to say there’s anything wrong with the build, though its use may be limited unless you want more frozen features on your LEGO Minecraft screen.
A generous number of minifigures are included in 21186 The Ice Castle. Two are exclusive to this set, and the others are common within LEGO Minecraft, though having an extra pair of zombies and skeletons will never go unnoticed.
Those exclusive minifigures include the Royal Warrior and a yeti. The Royal Warrior wields a shield with a snowflake design, which you could also use as a banner since it applies to both functions. The characters feature prints on the front and back of the torso, legs and head and help add more variety to the Minecraft minifigure selection after Alex and Steve’s many appearances in the theme.
For £44.99 / $49.99 / €49.99, the cost of 21186 The Ice Castle sits well in every region, with substantial build and a host of minifigures to expand your existing display, or start an entirely new LEGO Minecraft collection.
It’s hard to argue what’s included in this model for the price though swapping out the two skeletons for the rarer strays from 2018’s 21142 Polar Igloo would have been much appreciated, and more accurate given that they appear more frequently than normal skeletons in the ice. Peak biome.
An ice and snow biome might seem more suited to a winter range than a summer selection, but 21186 The Ice Castle stands out alongside the rest of the new theme models, presenting good value both in build and minifigures as well. as a welcoming presence with a range of bright and neutral colors.
There’s no need to turn your back on 21186 The Ice Castle this summer, though we understand that if your LEGO Minecraft budget is going towards bigger builds other than two minifigures and printed tiles, there’s not much more unique to 21186 The Ice Castle.
