The world of Minecraft is one that keeps on giving, with plenty for players to discover, interact with, and have fun with. Villagers are one of the inhabitants you can find in your Minecraft world, and the various jobs they hold can be particularly useful for trading. Here it is how to change villager jobs in Minecraft.
Check what job a villager has
First things first, you’ll want to check exactly what job a villager has. It’s worth noting that not all villagers will have a profession, as some may simply be unemployed or dumb.
If it’s none of these, then you’ll be able to tell what job a villager has by their clothes, as well as the job block they’re interacting with or stopped at. For example, the farming villagers wear straw hats.
We’ve broken down all the villager jobs below, with the job site block they’ll be using so you can figure them out nice and quick. It’s also worth noting that a villager’s profession will appear as a title at the top of the trade interface when you talk to them.
- Gunsmith – Blast Furnace
- Butcher – Smoker
- Cartographer – Cartography Table
- Cleric – Brewing stand
- Farmer – Composter
- Fisherman – Barrel
- archer – Fletching table
- Furrier – Cauldron
- librarian – Lectern
- Stone Mason (Bedrock Edition only) / Mason (Java Edition only) – Stonemason
- Simpleton -N/A
- Shepherd – Loom
- blacksmith – Blacksmith table
- Unemployed -N/A
- gunsmith – Millstone
How to Change Villager Jobs in Minecraft
To change a villager’s job, all you need to do is destroy the job site block they are currently using as their profession. For example, if you want to change a farmer villager’s job, you would destroy the composting block he is using.
Nitwits can’t change their professions in Minecraft, so if you come across this, save yourself some time and move on.
Note that breaking the job block a villager is using will make them very angry with you.
However, if you make sure that another job block is vacant and placed within a neighborhood of about 48 blocks from the villager, they will eventually look for a new job, find the block, and automatically change the villagers’ jobs in Minecraft.
As such, if you want to turn your former farmer into a gunsmith, I’d put a blast furnace right next to them and give them a little time, they should eventually become a gunsmith without needing any input from you.
It has been suggested that villagers can randomly switch jobs if you haven’t traded with them yet. This doesn’t seem to be the case, and it’s much faster to use the ‘lock’ method above anyway.
Professions and trade with villagers
Players can trade with villagers, ranking that villager up in the process. Ranking up a villager by trading with them will unlock more of their items that you can trade for. Emeralds will always be part of the business process. For example, if a villager offers different items, you will need to have emeralds to trade them. If they have emeralds, they will trade them for the items that are listed in the ‘trade’ option for that particular villager.
If a villager trades emeralds for items or trades items for emeralds are random and vary.
Each Minecraft villager profession will offer different items to trade. Unemployed villagers and Nitwit have nothing to trade. Unemployed villagers can be traded by placing one of the above job blocks in their vicinity. You can check out the full list of items available when trading with Minecraft villagers below.
