New gameplay details on Godzilla and Kong invading Call of Duty: Warzone, starting tomorrow

Meet the Titans: Godzilla and Kong

While they are classified as Protector Titans, Godzilla and Kong are capable of displaying unprecedented rage when provoked. When either of you is enraged, it’s best to know what you’re up against. This is what we know:

Godzilla

  • Monarch Designation: Godzilla
  • Scientific classification: titanus gojira
  • Height: 393 feet
  • Known attacks: Heat Ray Breath, Tail Slam, Dorsal Slash
  • Tail length: 582 feet
  • Top tail slide speed: 89 miles per hour
  • Underwater cruising speed: 40-50 knots
  • Roar volume: Up to 174dB
  • Blood volume: 530,000 gallons
  • Bone tensile strength: 3,000 MPa (Megapascals)
  • Heat Ray Energy Yield: 315 trillion joules

The King of Monsters has risen from the darkest depths of the ocean to unleash his devastating breath and thunderous roar on unsuspecting shores. His heat ray breath appears as several red circles on your minimap after it lights up Godzilla’s scales with an icy blue glow. It’s best to avoid his line of fire; those who end up in its destructive path have mere seconds to evade the attack.

kong

  • Monarch Designation: kong
  • Scientific classification: Titanus Kong
  • Height: 337 feet
  • Known attacks: Quake Slam, Fin Breaker, Air Ax Attack
  • Hitting force: Approx. 4.2 ML (Richter scale magnitude)
  • Bone tensile strength: 2,800 MPa (megapascals)
  • Roar Volume: Up to 170dB
  • Upper arm swing speed: 62MPH
  • Bipedal Max Running Speed: 78 miles per hour
  • Max quad running speed: 104 miles per hour
  • Preferred diet: Foliage, Bamboo, Mud Squid

Although his main domain is Skull Island, Kong is here in Caldera. He employs an epic brawler fighting style, using quick feet, aerial traversal, and sheer savage force to confuse and disorient his opponents. He will jump and jump around the island. Figuring out where he will land next requires more on-the-ground investigation by the operators. Keep your distance.

Intel Monarch Mode Operation

It is recommended that all Operators come prepared with a full Quad; Operation Monarch supports 60 players using the Resurgence rules. The goal is simple: be the last team standing.

On the ground, players will find Monarch Intel through Supply Boxes, special drops, and fallen enemies. Use it to charge up a special meter that unlocks items like Killstreaks and Loadout Drops, along with a unique and powerful Titan Killstreak reward for filling it all the way up.

While gathering intel and taking out enemies, operators will need to watch out for Kong and Godzilla. Dealing damage to either Titan grants additional Monarch Intel.

titanic frenzy

At the start of an Operation Monarch match, and at other times, Kong and Godzilla may become enraged and attack. This is known as Titan Frenzy. After receiving an alert from Titan Frenzy, an operator has two options: retreat tactically or attempt to suppress them by dealing direct damage.

The squad that deals the most damage to Kong or Godzilla during a Titan Frenzy will receive Monarch’s special SCREAM device. Runners-up will still get Monarch Intel to count towards their special intelligence meter, the final reward for which is the SCREAM device.

SCREAM device

The Titan SCREAM device (Titan Sonic Communication Radar and Echolocation Array Module) is a prototypical device developed by Monarch that allows humans to communicate with ancient creatures.

In Operation Monarch, the SCREAM device is a Killstreak that grants its user one of two powers: Godzilla’s breath of heat rays or Kong’s ground slam and a rock throw.

Once the type of attack is chosen, the Operator can direct it towards any location in Caldera. To prevent a barrage of attacks and protect the sensory nerves of our protective titans, multiple SCREAM devices cannot be used in quick succession.

Like any other Killstreak, timing and positioning are two important factors in its effectiveness.

Bringing the Titans to Call of Duty

The creators of Call of Duty are huge fans of these iconic monsters. To mark the momentous event, the developers discuss the excitement and responsibility that comes with bringing Godzilla and Kong into the game (plus some entertaining anecdotes from the process). Learn more from JJ Williams, Associate Creative Director at Raven, and Jason Babler, Associate Art Director of Live Ops at Sledgehammer Games:

Describe the team’s emotions working with these Legendary Titans, from when they first heard about it to when they first saw it in the game.

Williams: I think emotion is an understatement. When we found out that we would be working with Legendary Entertainment and on Titans in Warzone, our jaws dropped. We knew we had the opportunity to make the leap and create an experience that hadn’t been seen yet.

mumbler: All in all, these packs were some of the most fun and challenging we’ve created so far! Fortunately, Legendary gave us a enormous sandbox to design within, allowing us to come up with designs based on Godzilla and Kong in a whole new way. We’ve taken these beloved Titans, combined them with our COD aesthetic, and crafted some truly unique Operator skins that haven’t been seen before.

What were some of the technical challenges involved with bringing the Titans into the game?

Williams: There were numerous challenges in getting two gigantic titans into the play space. I’ll save all the technical details, but keeping Kong and Godzilla working within Warzone’s technology and playing well with all the rules of the game was quite a challenge. It has not been easy, but nothing good is.

Can you share any funny development moments that stick with you?

Williams: Some of the funniest moments involved unexpected bugs that we ran into early in the development process. Sometimes Kong would jump up into the air and never come back down and continue to jump forever in space. Godzilla sometimes just swam across the island like a land shark. All things fun.

From a creative standpoint, what are some of the challenges in adapting the aesthetics of these iconic monsters into Operator skins?

mumbler: These skins proved quite challenging, due to the nature of the design challenge: How do you take these skyscraper-sized beasts and make them feel powerful as human-sized operators? We wanted to avoid just downscaling the Titans to a “person in a rubber suit” version, especially with the way the Godzilla movies were originally created, or a cheesy ape suit. Our team went through a very long creative exploration, which brought us back to the drawing board more than once. However, we collectively found interesting character archetypes that seemed to fit each Titan, and the animation was able to fill out those characters with incredible move sets. Kong needed to be a brute soldier, so we took our largest male rig and then expanded the shoulder armor to look more like Kong. For Godzilla, we wanted a layered look to mimic scales and sell a backbone that can light up. The ghillie suit worked not only as lighting, but also to suggest Godzilla’s scales, especially on his back. And we took inspiration from the metal and technology of Mechagodzilla and kept going back to a cyberpunk samurai theme.

The weapons were a bit easier to conceive of, and the weapons and VFX gear make our Ultra Godzilla pistol feel entertaining and devastating at the same time. I remember the day it all came together and we got to go through Godzilla’s weapon inspection – sound effects from the movie, visual effects created an amazing Godzilla breath effect… we were all grinning like kids again for hours as we passed the video by the studio. .

Limited Time Operation Monarch Bundles

Three Monsterverse-inspired packs Godzilla vs. Kong will be available during Operation Monarch. These include the Godzilla Reactive Mastercraft Limited Time Bundle, the Kong Limited Time Bundle, and the Mechagodzilla Limited Time Bundle. Check out some details about the latter:

Tracker Pack: Mechagodzilla Limited Time Pack

For the latest and greatest in Apex technology, look no further than the Tracer Pack: Mechagodzilla Limited Time Bundle.

This pack includes two ranged weapons built to take on titans. Both feature rapid-fire attachments, with the Cybernetic Destroyer assault rifle capable of piercing Kong and Godzilla’s thick defenses at medium range. The Neural Uplink SMG favors close-range action a bit more, for those who aren’t afraid to take on enemy squads and 300-foot-tall beasts alike.

Operation Monarch begins on May 11
