The Case of the Green Goblin in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

The Case of the Green Goblin in Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

Marvel Spider-Man 2 It’s targeting a release sometime in 2023, and it’s easily among the most anticipated PS5 exclusives. The original PS4 title was a huge success for Insomniac in 2018, setting a new standard for Spiderman and superhero games in general. The fast-paced action, captivating story, and visuals created a gripping experience. Longtime fans of the web spinner also tangled with many of the hero’s notable foes, including the Kingpin and Doctor Octopus.

Spidey has no shortage of enemies, and Insomniac still has plenty to choose from in Marvel Spider-Man 2. Based on the reveal trailer, it looks like Venom and Kraven the Hunter will factor into the plot, while rumors also suggest the Lizard could enter the fray. While the game already seems packed as is, there may be room to include another great villain from Spider-Man’s rogues gallery: Green Goblin. Considering the hints that were given in the first game and how important he is as an antagonist, there should be an effort to make him appear in some way.

The Spider-Man/Green Goblin Dynamic

The Green Goblin is to Spider-Man what the Joker is to Batman. The hero and the villain counteract each other and balance what a relationship between good and evil looks like. Throughout the vast history of these characters, the two have crossed paths many times in spectacular confrontations, so it would be a missed opportunity for Insomniac not to offer their own version of the antagonist.

What’s so interesting about the Green Goblin is that he’s motivated by more nefarious reasons than other enemies. While the Kingpin seeks wealth and power, or Doctor Octopus wants to prove that he has superior intellect, the Green Goblin just wants to make Spider-Man’s life miserable. Haunting Peter’s personal life and loved ones, most notably being responsible for the infamous death of Gwen Stacy, makes Goblin a sinister foe.

The reveal trailer mentioned above for Marvel Spider-Man 2 seems to hint at a darker narrative for the sequel. The plot seems to be pushing Peter both physically and emotionally. For that reason, the Green Goblin’s dastardly plans would fit right in with this theme and go the extra mile to push Spidey over the edge.

Marvel’s Spider-Man Hints At Green Goblin

Even ignoring the character’s impact on Spider-Man in other media, Insomniac has already planted numerous seeds in the first installment as to where things may go next. First off, Norman Osborn (Goblin’s alter ego) has already had a significant presence in the events of Insomniac’s portrayal. Being the mayor of New York, Osborn had a lot of influence, and it remains to be seen how much he is involved in with the city’s criminal underworld.

Osborn, being removed from his position at the end of the game and publicly embarrassed for his involvement in the Devil’s Breath outbreak, may have left him bitter. This would give him even more motivation to wear the green suit, throw bombs at innocent bystanders, not to mention that he will seek revenge on a certain wall-crawler for being a big part of revealing the truth behind Osborn’s actions.

Also, at a later point in the game, players discover some Easter eggs that clearly reference the Green Goblin. Blueprint designs for a glider, armor, and other weapons bear an uncanny resemblance to the iconic villain. It would seem strange to include these details and not plan to follow up at some point in the future.

How Green Goblin May Influence Marvel’s Spider-Man 2

Marvel Spider-Man 2 It’s already shaping up to be a big game, so it might seem hard to find room for Green Goblin. With Kraven chasing Spider-Man all over New York, Venom on the prowl, and other crazed gangs, it might seem hard to include the Green Goblin as well. The key is to balance each villain in the narrative.

It’s worth noting that the first game also had a large number of villains, but each enemy felt like they got a fair amount of time in the spotlight. Kingpin, Shocker, Mister Negative, and Sinister Six appear in the plot, and it works. A strategy that Marvel Spider-Man 2 could employ is building the Green Goblin over the course of the game, similar to how Doctor Octopus was dealt with in the previous title.

As they competed with Kraven and Venom, players were able to witness Osborn’s slow fall and descent into madness. This can explode in the third act of the game, with Kraven, Venom, and Goblin loose in the city, randomly attacking the player as Nemesis in Resident Evil 3. What Insomniac has in store for the sequel remains to be seen, but having one of Spidey’s most memorable foes making some sort of appearance is an obvious direction.

Marvel Spider-Man 2 it is scheduled to release in 2023 for PS5.
