Some players will find the end of Resident Evil Village be puzzling. Many plot threads come together here, both from this game and from Resident Evil 7, so it’s easy to get confused. We will review the last 30 minutes of RE Village and explain the ending. We’ll also examine what happens in the post-credits scene and what it means for the series.
How does Resident Evil Village end?
The end of Resident Evil Village begins with Ethan defeating Heisenberg’s mutated form. Mother Miranda appears, she tells Ethan that Rose will be reincarnated as her daughter and literally rips out his heart.
Chris Redfield regroups with Wolf Squad, and he and his team set out to destroy the Megamycyte that gives Mother Miranda her powers and rescue Rose. Another BSAA team also arrives, much to Chris’ surprise, wondering what they’re doing there.
Chris fights his way through the village and calls in missile strikes against a massive mycete barrier guarding the path to Dimitrescu Castle. Once he gets through the wall, Chris discovers that there are a series of underground caverns that lead to the Megamycyte. He fights off a large Lycan guarding the area and places a bomb on the Megamycyte. However, remembering his promise to save Rose, he refrains from detonating it and continues through the cave.
Chris finds Mother Miranda’s lab and discovers her backstory. The Miranda mother lost her daughter in the Spanish flu outbreak a hundred years before the game. When she lost her daughter Eva, Miranda went into a cave to die and found the Megamycete, which infected her. She discovered that the Megacycete absorbs the consciousness and memories of anyone buried in the ground above. Knowing this, Miranda planned to find a vessel to bring Eva back to life.
After a hundred years of experimenting with the villagers, Miranda finally found the perfect candidate. She had previously given a sample of Eve’s mold and DNA to The Connections, which resulted in the creation of Eveline. Miranda considered her a failure, but she led to the birth of Rose. Rose’s perfect blend of human and fungal genetics meant that she could be used to bring Eva back to life.
Chris also finds the real Mia still alive in Miranda’s lab. After confirming that it really is her, they begin to return to her team’s helicopter so that she can be evacuated.
Meanwhile, Ethan realizes that he actually died three years earlier at the Baker’s house when Jack kicked him in the head. He has lived by sheer force of will as a cast. That’s why he was able to withstand such a large amount of physical damage and reattach his limbs. He wakes up to find himself in the Duke’s carriage on the way to Mother Miranda’s location. However, he is on the last legs of him as he has taken too much damage. His hands have begun to turn to stone and ash, and he doesn’t have much time left.
Ethan arrives at the ceremony site and is confronted by Mother Miranda. Rose has been reborn, and Miranda and Ethan fight over her. After an intense fight, Miranda turns to stone and crumbles, revealing Rose. As Chris helps Ethan escape, the Megacycete emerges from underground and rises to attack.
Ethan volunteers to stay behind and detonate the bomb attached to the Megamycete as it slowly falls apart. Chris returns to the helicopter with Rose and takes off. As he begins his ascent, Ethan detonates the bomb, destroying the Megamycete and the village.
As they fly away, one of Chris’s squad members reveals that they recovered the body of one of the BSAA soldiers and that they weren’t human. Instead, the BSAA sent out a bio-organic weapons squad to collect samples of the mycete (which has huge implications for the future of the series). Chris gives orders to collect the rest of the squad from him and plot a course to BSAA Europe headquarters so he can get to the bottom of what the organization is planning.
Resident Evil Village post-credits scene explained
There is a post-credits epilogue in Resident Evil Village that will confuse some players as it takes place in the future. The blonde-haired girl who places flowers on Ethan’s grave is Rose. This means that if Rose ages normally, this scene is around 15-18 years after the main game.
Rose’s ancestry makes her half molded and half human. This appears to have given him superhuman abilities. The only thing we can see is increased strength from her as she yells at the agent who jokingly called her “Eveline”.
This scene leaves much to the imagination. We know that Rose is working with an organization to combat “situations” and that Chris is involved in some way. However, we don’t know if this is intended to carry over to a future game or simply show that Rose survived and managed to keep her humanity intact.
