Minecraft is the popular video game from Mojang Studios and features block-style graphics that allow players to build intricate and immense structures. They can also take part in all kinds of game modes, from survival to creative and more, making it one of the most versatile games available. Minecraft it has spawned a wealth of products and content, from clothing, toys, books, an interactive TV show, and even its own convention, MineCon. The game is also exceptionally popular on YouTube, with users uploading its various mods and games to share with other gamers, generating massive followers and views.
It has now been announced (via THR) that Momoa will lead the long development Minecraft film, which is currently slated to be directed by Jared Hess (napoleon dynamite). No details were given about Momoa’s character or how he would be portrayed in Minecraft (live action or otherwise). Aside from Momoa and Hess, no other cast or crew announcements were made, and it’s still unknown what creative direction the film will take to bring the blocky-style game to life on the big screen.
The Minecraft The film has been in development since 2014 with numerous creatives coming in and out of the mix. Initially, it was being produced by the lego movie producer Roy Lee with The Adam Project‘s Shawn Levy on board to direct. Levy eventually backed out, as he wasn’t sure how to bring Minecraft to life in live-action form, but Lee has stayed on board the project continuously. At a point, It’s always sunny in PhillyRob McElhenney went on to direct, but also left the project and was replaced by Peter Sollett (Nick and Norah’s Infinite Playlist). It was also previously reported that Steve Carell would star in Minecraftbut was eventually dropped due to scheduling issues.
Momoa and Hess joining the Minecraft The film adds significant weight to the project, as it seemed to languish whenever it changed hands in the past. Both Momoa and Hess have the spirit and charm that could make the film something special, given their previous work. Each of them has dabbled in high and low budget fares and they are sure to have a firm understanding of what Minecraft it will be at this time, so it feels like the safest prospect yet for the movie to happen. However, given the shaky track record thus far, it is quite possible that the Minecraft The movie could go through more rounds of cast/director changes before it hits the big screen.
