5 top tips to get better at Minecraft speedrunning

Speedrunning Minecraft can be a very exciting experience. There is something incredibly exciting about racing to beat your best time. The feeling of accomplishment that comes from breaking a personal record is incredible.

At the end of the day, practice makes perfect. The more you run, the better you’ll perform (even if Minecraft has its fair share of chances mixed in with quick runs).

Below, Minecraft players can find some quick tips on how to improve your overall sprint performance while practicing.

Conflict Avoidance and 4 Other Great Tips to Improve Sprint Skills in Minecraft

1) Seed/map selection

While it is possible to speed up random Minecraft seeds, players are encouraged to find one that they feel is suitable, at least as far as practice is concerned. This seed could have multiple blacksmiths close to spawn, better access to materials, or improved access to the Nether/End portal.

There are even custom practice maps created specifically for players to learn the nuances of speedrunning. Convenience is an important part of finding the right seed. The less a player fights, the more successful their total quick run time will be.

2) Avoid conflict if possible

It may be unavoidable at times, but staying away from hostile mobs is imperative in Minecraft speedruns. Certain mob interactions, such as bartering, are not required, but spending time attacking hostile mob will only increase the completion time.

Occasionally enemies appear in bad locations and players have no choice but to fight them. However, instead of killing the mobs, players need to take them down with a few melee attacks and run past them like a rabbit.

3) Practice MLG bucket tricks

When traversing the Overworld and Nether in a Minecraft speedrun, it’s not unheard of to take a bad fall. This can often lead to a large amount of fall damage or even death and a forced race restart.

This is one of the main reasons players may want to practice the MLG water bucket trick. When done correctly, it can use water to protect players from any fall damage.

Ideally, a player won’t need to use this trick, but a bad fall can cause a reset or put them in a very bad position.

4) Factors to consider on your route

When running repeated attempts on a given seed or speedrun map, Minecraft players will want to plan their routes for optimal speed. However, newer players may not be familiar with the factors worth considering when planning a route.

There are several aspects to consider. These include abyssal portals, fortresses for fire rods, food sources, and the source of items that allow players to traverse terrain quickly (such as ender pearls and ladders).

It might not be a bad idea to draw a map or use a flowchart system to find the best possible path on the seed or map, just to be safe.

5) Practice the first day in excess

Just like playing standard Minecraft, a player’s first day is crucial. If players drag their feet or make mistakes on their first day, the end result of the race can be quite unsatisfying. This is part of the reason why routing is so important. Players who don’t know where their targets are can spend a pointless time rambling or fixing bugs.

Plan and then execute. Practice finding the resources and goals you need over and over again in a given seed to make sure your first day goes well.

With an efficient early game, Minecraft players can enter the Nether and End quickly and defeat the Ender Dragon in a much more convenient way.
