Time in Minecraft doesn’t work in mysterious ways. Still, it’s an item that many players struggle with, thanks to the time-specific mechanics of a myriad of components. For example, you have to wait for night to spawn hostile mobs and day to control your villagers. Fortunately, if you know how to set the time of day or night in Minecraft, you can be in charge of your world and make it work at your command. From changing day and night cycles to skipping weeks in the game, it’s all up for grabs in this article. But before changing the time, you’ll need to spend some time understanding its mechanics. So let’s not waste another second and find out everything you need to know about the time command. Also, we will explain the game tick and how you can use it to control the time of day.
Set the time of day in Minecraft (2022)
We will first cover the mechanics of the time loop in Minecraft. If you are already familiar with them, use the table below to jump ahead and learn about the time command and its syntax.
How does time work in Minecraft?
Time in Minecraft is measured in ticks. A a single tick lasts 50 milliseconds (0.05 seconds) and ends a logical loop in the game in that time. This cycle does a variety of things in the game, including spawning mob, block upgrades, Redstone mechanics, and more. You can use our dedicated guide to Minecraft ticks and learn all about it.
Also, the same ticks make up a Minecraft day. A the full day-night cycle lasts 24000 ticks or 20 minutes in the real world. And you can use the time command to skip parts of the day by adding some ticks to the time that has passed in the game.
How does Time Command affect the game?
The time command in Minecraft only affects the daylight cycle and general world time. this command cannot be used to speed up the world or its processes. However, you can use it to avoid the night and therefore not allow hostile mobs to spawn. But if you want to speed up or slow down your world, the only option is to change the random tick speed.
How to change Tick speed in Minecraft?
With each tick, Minecraft updates a random set of blocks. In the Java edition, three blocks are updated, while in the Bedrock edition only one block is updated with each flag. You can use the “gamerule” command to change this random speed and speed up block updating and thus your world.
We already have a dedicated guide covering how to change random dial speed in Minecraft. You can use this guide to change the speed of most entities and block updates in your game.
Uses of the time command in Minecraft
The neatest way to use the time command is to change the time of your day and set it to noon, day, or night in Minecraft. But you can also use it to check and modify the time of your day. It has three keywords:
- Add: Allows you to add time to the age of your Minecraft world
- Query: Shows the detail of the elapsed time
- Establish: Allows you to set your day-night cycle at a specific time
How to use the time command in Minecraft
Just like all other useful commands in Minecraft, you can only use the time command in Minecraft in a cheat enabled world. Therefore, you will need to enable cheats in your game first. For that, you have to toggle the “Allow Cheats” option in LAN settings which are available from the pause menu in the Java edition. Meanwhile, the same can be activated in the world settings of the Bedrock edition.
Once you have cheats enabled, you need to enter the time command in the chat section (accessible using the T key or right click on your D-Pad) of Minecraft to set the time of day or night. Let’s go over the different syntax and keywords to get the most out of them.
add time command
To add time to your Minecraft world, you should use the following time command syntax:
/time add X
Here, “X” is the numerical value by which you want to increase the time. It must be followed by “d” for days, “s” for seconds, and “t” for ticks. For example,
/time add 22d add twenty-two days to the age of the world.
Time command: query
The time command’s “query” keyword is the simplest and displays the amount of time you have spent in your world. The syntax of this command is as follows:
/time query Y
In this syntax, “Y” can be replaced with “day”, “time of day”, and “game time”. Each of them shows a different value:
- Day: Number of days that have passed in your world
- day time: Current time of your day in terms of ticks. It resets after each day and night cycle and cannot be more than 24,000.
- Game time: Number of ticks that have passed since the creation of your world
set time command
1. The last keyword for the time command is “set”, and it is the most powerful. You can use the following format to change the time in the day-night cycle:
/set time A
Here, “A” can be replaced by “day”, “noon”, “night” and “midnight”. The game will then set the time of your day relative to that keyword in Minecraft. For example, you can use the command –
/time set midnight to enjoy the moonlit skies and mob fights in minecraft.
2. Alternatively, you can also use the time command to reset your Minecraft world time. To do this, use the following syntax:
/set time B
Here, “B” needs to be replaced with a numeric value. You must add “s” for seconds, “d” for days, or “t” for ticks to the numeric value. This will set your world time to a specific time. For example, “/set time 0t” will reset your world clock.
Examples: how the time command works in minecraft
To better understand the time command, let’s go through some examples and try them out in-game. Feel free to go ahead and match your in-game results with our screenshots. In the following command, I am adding 12000 ticks to my current time of day in Minecraft, so it is set to 17726 ticks to switch to night. Also, as you can see, I am using a command block for this process.
/time add 12000
In the following command, as explained above, we’ll use the query keyword along with the game time to see the exact amount of time that has passed in your Minecraft world since you created it. Is that how it works:
/time query gametime
How to set the time of day in Minecraft
Now that you’re familiar with the time command in Minecraft, it’s time to use it to control the day. Use this command to set the time of day in Minecraft:
/time set day O / set time 1000
The two commands mentioned above will convert your game time to early morning. But we suggest you use the “set day” keyword, as it does not affect the number of days that have passed. However, “set 1000” will set your in-game days to zero.
Alternatively, you can also set the time of day to noon using the command below. The “noon” keyword sets your world time to the middle of the day. It is the moment with maximum natural light and brightness in Minecraft.
/time fixed noon O / set time 6000
How to set the night time in Minecraft
To set your world time to night in Minecraft, you can use the following command:
/fixed time night O / set time 13000
This command sets your world time to early evening. As soon as you use it, hostile mobs will start appearing in your world. Without forgetting, we suggest you use the “set the night” keyword instead of “set 13000” to ensure that the number of days in your world does not become zero.
Also, if you want to jump further at night, you can use the following command:
/set time midnight OR / set time 18000
As you can guess from the keyword term, this command sets the world time to midnight. With that, you can expect to be surrounded by darkness and hostile Minecraft mobs in no time. Now, you know how to easily set the time of day or night in Minecraft.
How long is a game day in Minecraft?
In terms of in-game ticks, a full day of Minecraft can be divided into four parts:
|Time of the day||ticks|
You can use these values with the “set time” command to change your Minecraft world settings however you like. Similarly, these ticks can also be converted to real world time. Use the table below to make the best use of your Minecraft farms in the context of real time.
|ticks||minecraft time||real world time|
|24,000||1 day||20 minutes|
|1,000||1 hour||50 seconds|
|168,000||1 week||~2.3 hours|
|192,000||1 Lunar Cycle (Moon)||~2.6 hours|
