Alone in the dark it’s packed with dangerous situations, including books that will kill you if you read them and floors that (if you don’t pay close attention to the cracks) just collapse under you. When you open a door and see a group of ghouls sitting motionless around a dining table, the smart move is to back away carefully. Will you have to come back later? Possibly, but weapons and ammo are in short supply, and you’ll be looking for any opportunity to avoid these encounters.

“If you have this very heavy, dense, dark story, it helps… but I realized there was still something more,” he said. Even the game’s low poly aesthetic has a purpose. Sure, Carnby could skewer small animals with his pointed mustache, but the angular nature of Alone in the darkThe horrors of has helped them stand the test of time. The two guardian gargoyles found at the top of the second top ladder in the game are all claws and spiked purple wings. They don’t actively attack until you get close, but just looking at them is enough to make you uncomfortable.

Alone in the dark isn’t perfect – your protagonist’s fighting animations are so ridiculously clunky that they risk throwing you out of the game. Still, combat should be a last resort, especially since at least one enemy, who has the ability to walk through shelves, is totally immune to your normal attacks.

Should you play the original? Alone in the dark? absolutely, and in $5.99 for the game and its two sequels, there is no excuse not to experience this groundbreaking and deeply disturbing adventure. Whether it should have restarted (again) is another matter entirely – the restart at least sticks to your period and location settings. But if you want to experience the original success of Survival Horror (since before “survival horror” even had a name), there’s no better time than the present.
