The puzzles, visions and tense sequences make Madison a real treat that will keep you guessing even after the credits roll. This first-person psychological horror brought something fresh and mysterious to the genre, so it will leave you wanting more. To help you with your quest for some more of that menacing goodness, there are a few equally satisfying games you can check out.

THE GAMER VIDEO OF THE DAY

10 survive 2

Outlast 2 puts you in the shoes of Blake, equipped with his camera, as he searches for his wife after crashing somewhere in Arizona. You have to contend with members of a violent cult, increasingly intense hallucinations, and a constantly draining camera battery that is always a threat when you need it most.

If you’ve ever wondered what it would be like to sneak through a town hell-bent on preparing for the end times, it’s time to visit Temple Gate. Ah, the joys of investigative journalism.

9 witching hour

Witching Hour has five different endings that are highly dependent on your decisions throughout the game. You kick things off by going to your family’s rundown house that was abruptly abandoned by the tenant you were renting it from. You eventually come across a door in the house with a crucifix and chains holding it shut, so it’s a promising welcome.

Throughout this story, you must solve puzzles and confront your way into the heart of the city’s powerful witchcraft. The Mummy has taught us all that “you must not read from the book!”. Fortunately, the protagonist of Witching Hour goes against that sacred rule, and in return, you can enjoy this fast-paced horror adventure.

8 Devour

Devour takes you through various periods of a cult’s history, with each level having a different setting and main antagonist. As the story goes, the Watchers of Azazel have abandoned their previous lives to worship the demon Azazel. As expected with demons, he decides to possess the cult leader and attempt to unleash his wrath on the world.

Here you and three other friends can join together to perform a ritual that will stop this great evil. Your membership in the cult will obviously be tarnished now, but it’s worth it as the fate of the world hangs in the balance. However, Azazel keeps finding new hosts, so he can look forward to more lore-based updates.

7 Resident Evil Village

The entire Resident Evil series is known for having massive, imposing villains stalking you throughout the game, and Resident Evil Village maintains that in an entry that is otherwise quite a departure from previous titles.

Apart from the puzzles, you also have to consider the combat as you take on the various abominations in this game. Bioterrorism, gigantic “vampire” ladies, fishmen, and salvages that may be few and far between will terrify him as he tries to find his missing son. As if Ethan Winters didn’t spend enough in Biohazard.

6 Face

Visage is another title that has established itself in the horror game scene as one of the best psychological horror indie titles of recent times. It’s quite beautiful, despite being absolutely terrifying. It also does not hurt that it is part of the Game Pass for Xbox and PC.

There’s a lot to figure out here, which can be challenging due to the unique jump scares and relentlessly tense atmosphere throughout the game. Things get surreal when you try to figure out why you are in this deserted house being haunted by ghosts.

5 Amnesia the dark descent

Amnesia: The Dark Descent has become a horror classic despite being just over a decade old. Hostile creatures lurk around every corner, but you also have to deal with the darkness and sanity of your own character.

It takes you through a story that is worth finishing despite the scares you must face to get there. If you enjoyed Madison’s narrow hallways, perception shifts, and troublesome protagonist, this is your next stop.

4 Alien: Isolation

Few games establish the absolute feeling of dread quite like Alien: Isolation does. You play as Amanda, the daughter of the iconic Ellen Ripley. Despite your badass lineage, you’re decidedly more vulnerable when trying to find your long-lost mother.

As he traverses space stations with unfriendly occupants, he must also avoid being captured by the Xenomorph. As if the cinematic gameplay wasn’t exciting enough, the Xenomorph’s AI also learns from your behavior, so you can’t stick to one strategy if you want to live.

3 the back room 1998

The Backrooms 1998 builds on the long tradition of the popular creepypasta, The Backrooms. The objective is simple: hide, explore and escape. Naturally, resistance, entities, and puzzles prevent you from doing these tasks easily.

While there are plenty of games that deal with The Backrooms, this one, in particular, stands out for its use of claustrophobia and built-up tension to enhance each jumpscare and liminal space vibe. Choose this if you want a fun found footage horror entry that also listens to your microphone. Try not to breathe challenge, anyone?

two layers of fear

Layers of Fear does a remarkable job of creating a unique psychological horror experience. Like Madison, this game manages to create clever scares and interesting ways to change the game when you least expect it.

As you explore, you learn more about your protagonist’s backstory and why he’s reached this near-manic state. Keep sliding down the rabbit hole and face ever-changing locations, dark themes, and doors you don’t want to open.

1 Martha is dead

Martha Is Dead is a psychological horror game that really gets you under your skin. It’s an extremely bleak setting right in the middle of war and loss. Many moments can be hard to digest, but the game is deeply engaging and its visuals are genuinely captivating.

If you felt Madison was too brutal already, you might want to gear up for this one. Note that the PS4 version is even censored, so expect a disturbing six to ten hours.
