Minecraft Survival mode offers a lot to players. There are biomes and dimensions to discover, and various mobs to help or hinder the player’s progress along the way. There are also some fantasy RPG elements like enchantments, consumables, and even status effects that spice up the game.
Status effects in particular come in a variety of flavors. Players can use them to their advantage to survive longer or to move faster and deal more damage. Alternatively, some status effects can be fatal and severely handicap the player against a horde of hostile mobs. Here is a breakdown of every status effect on Minecraftand how players can get them.
Positive status effects
These status effects have a positive effect on the player and are generally desirable effects.
|Absorption||Players get additional yellow hearts on top of their health bar for a limited time.||Golden Apples, Enchanted Golden Apples, and Immortality Totems|
|power conduit||Players have infinite water breathing and underwater night vision. Mining blocks underwater is easier.||Standing in the water near an active conduit.|
|Fire resistant||Players do not take damage from fire or lava.||Enchanted Golden Apples, Totems of Immortality, some versions of Suspicious Stew (Allium), Fire Resistance Arrows, and all variants of Fire Resistance Potions.|
|Rush||Players gain increased attack and mining speed.||Beacons with the Haste status effect activated.|
|village hero||Players receive rewards from members of a village.||Successfully defeat all waves of a raid on a town.|
|instant health||Players instantly gain health.||Healing Potion and all its variants, as well as Healing Arrows.|
|Invisibility||Players become invisible to mobs and other players.||Invisibility Potion and all its variants, as well as Invisibility Arrows.|
|jump impulse||Players gain the ability to jump higher. They also take less damage from falls.||Jump Potion and all its variants, Jump Arrows, active beacons with the Jump Boost status effect activated, and some versions of Suspicious Stew (Cornflower).|
|night vision||Greater visibility under water, as well as in dark areas or at night.||Night Vision Potion and all its variants, Night Vision Arrows, being near a Conduit (underwater visibility only), and some versions of Suspicious Stew (Poppy).|
|Regeneration||Players will quickly regenerate health over time, even without eating.||Regeneration Potion and all its variants, Regeneration Arrows, active beacons with the Regeneration status effect activated, consuming Golden Apples, Enchanted Golden Apples or Suspicious Stew (Oxeye Daisy), Undying Totems, or killing an enemy near a axolotl.|
|Endurance||Players will negate more incoming damage.||Turtle Master’s Potion and all its variants, activates beacons with the Endurance status effect activated, consuming Enchanted Golden Apples and Turtle Master Arrows.|
|Saturation||Players will lose hunger points more slowly.||Some versions of Suspicious Stew (Blue Orchid or Dandelion).|
|Slow fall||Players will fall more slowly and take less fall damage.||Slow Fall Potion and all its variants, and Slow Fall Arrows.|
|Speed||Players will walk at a faster pace.||Potion of Swiftness and all its variants, Arrows of Swiftness, and trigger beacons with the Speed status effect activated.|
|Strength||Players gain increased melee attack damage, bows are not affected.||Force Potion and all its variants, Force Arrows and active beacons with the Force status effect activated.|
|water breathing||Players can breathe underwater and not lose bubbles in their oxygen bar.||Water Breathing Potion and all its variants, Water Breaking Arrows, being near an active Conduit underwater, and wearing a tortoise shell helmet (timer must be refreshed by swimming to the surface).|
|*Levitation||Players will float up for several blocks.||Being hit by a shulker shell.|
Note: The Health Boost status effect is technically in-game, but not currently used.
Negative Status Effects
These status effects will generally affect or harm the player in one way or another, and are therefore somewhat undesirable or even fatal.
|*bad omen||A neutral status effect that activates and starts a raid when the player enters a village.||After killing a Captain, a Raider with a banner, the player will get this debuff.|
|Blindness||Players will have reduced visibility. Dealing critical damage and running becomes impossible.||Some versions of Suspicious Stew (Azure Bluet).|
|Darkness||Players lose some of their visibility.||When a Sculk Shrieker is activated or when the Guardian is nearby.|
|Hunger||Players will get hungry faster.||Eating bad food like rotten meat, puffer fish, or raw chicken, as well as being attacked by a shell.|
|instant damage||Instantly take magic damage that ignores armor.||Being hit by a Damage Potion and any of its variants, as well as Damage Arrows.|
|mining fatigue||Players will extract and attack slower.||Being near a Senior Warden.|
|Nausea||Players will feel sick and their screen will begin to warp violently.||Eat a puffer fish.|
|Poison||Players will lose health over time, but this status effect will not be fatal to them.||Poison Potion and all its variants, Poison Arrows, eating a Poison Potato, Puffer Fish, Spider Eye or Suspicious Stew (Lily of the Valley version), or being attacked by a Bee, Puffer Fish or Cave Spider.|
|Slowness||Players will walk at a slower pace.||Slow Potion and all its variants, Turtle Master Potions and all its variants, Slow Arrows and Turtle Master Arrows, and being attacked by strays.|
|Weakness||Players deal less melee attack damage, bows are not affected.||Potion of Weakness and all its variants, Arrows of Weakness, and some versions of Suspicious Stew (Tulip).|
|Wither||Players lose damage over time as their hearts turn black.||Decay Potion and all its variants, Decay Arrows, being hit by Wither or Wither Skeleton, being near Wither Rose, or consuming the Wither Rose version of Suspect Stew.|
* The effect itself is neutral but has negative consequences when activated.
Bedrock Exclusive Status Effects
These status effects can only be found in Minecraft Bedrock Edition and may be similar to some included in Java Edition, or both.
- Mortal poison: It damages the player and can also kill them. This status effect only applies to parrots that are given a cookie to eat. Otherwise, it must be accessed with commands.
Java edition exclusive status effects
These status effects can be found exclusively in Minecraft Java edition or by commands.
|*Bad luck||Players are less likely to win good loot.||Currently not available.|
|dolphin grace||Players swim faster while in the water.||Being in the water near dolphins.|
|Sparkly||Players will get a glowing outline.||Spectral arrows. Ringing a bell near certain enemies like Illagers or Witches also applies the glow to them.|
|**Luck||Players have more chances to win some nice loot.||Currently not available.|
