‘Call of Duty’ leak reveals scrapped idea that could fix series’ biggest flaw

Information about him discarded call of duty: black ops 4 A campaign has sprung up, and based on leaks, the story mode appears to have been a groundbreaking leap for the series. One aspect, in particular, focused on a 2v2 co-op live service element that allowed players to compete against other teams to complete mission objectives, which would change story progression. This would have been a first for the series, but sadly, it never came to be. The idea showed promise, and we’re hopeful it will resurface in a future Call of Duty game to add some much-needed excitement to the series.

An innovative approach

Black Ops 4’s discarded campaign would have been a live service co-op mode.activision

black ops 4 is famous for not including a campaign mode, instead only focusing on multiplayer. That did not prevent it from having a good commercial performance, accumulating more than $500 million during its opening weekend in 2018. Still, many gamers felt it was an incomplete package due to the lack of a proper story mode.

According to Reddit user Purpletoaster20, the black ops 4 the campaign would have been called Career, with an emphasis on live service components tied to multiplayer. As reported by Kotakuthis mode was removed due to management issues at Treyarch, the studio in charge of developing the game, along with a general lack of quality.

Career mode would have given players a choice between two factions: Free People’s Army (FPA) or World United Nations (WUN), each with opposing goals, culminating in an interesting competitive co-op experience. Depending on which team finished their objective first, the story would play out in different ways, offering variety and replay value.

For example, the opening mission, air Assault Convoy, required the FPA to escort a group of vehicles through a neutral zone in Ethiopia, while the WUN took it upon themselves to destroy the convoy, offering two different perspectives on the same mission.

On another mission, Data controlthe FPA’s goal was to infiltrate a base to hack and defend the terminals, while the WUN was to plant explosive devices around the base to prevent the FPA from extracting data.

On top of that, there were plans for seasonal content to be released periodically after launch, which would have offered additional quests. Had it been executed correctly, this would have enticed players to re-register.

A reason to experience history.

Despite selling over 30 million copies, most players did not complete the Modern Warfare 2019 campaign.activision

Black Ops 4 Career mode would have been a far cry from the often straightforward, linear campaigns that most Call of Duty games include. The single-player campaigns throughout the series are typically underwhelming and often not engaging enough for players to try, let alone see them through to the end.

In fact, looking at the trophy percentages of Modern war 2019 on PlayStation 4, only 12 percent of players finished the single-player campaign. To put this in perspective, the game reached 30 million copies sold as of September 2020. While this stat only represents internet connected PS4 players, it’s a decent representation of how few players actually completed the story mode.

According to recent leaks, Black Ops 4 Career mode would have been different enough to motivate more players to participate, especially since it offered XP that carried over into multiplayer.

This would also have made the pack feel unified, with a shared progression system across Career, Zombies, and Multiplayer. As it stands now, Call of Duty campaigns often feel disconnected from other modes, with little incentive to try them out, even if they’re of high quality.

It is not clear whether ideas related to Black Ops 4 story mode will never dive into a future Call of Duty game. On paper, the premise sounded interesting, but it clearly didn’t fit. It is unlikely that we will see anything similar in the next modern warfare iibut maybe the Career mode will appear in a later game.

We’d love to see a riff on Black Ops 4 Career mode will be implemented in a future installment because, as it stands, Call of Duty campaigns are in desperate need of a change.
