Ahead of Melbourne International Games Week in October, a list of upcoming locally made digital games was revealed.

Today, six highly anticipated games were showcased at local creative studio, Paper House, in Melbourne’s northern suburbs. The developers and creatives behind Cult of the Lamb, Future Folklore, Kindest World, Way into the Woods, Strand Wayward Y Wood and Climate were on hand to present exclusively guided previews of their games.

The Victorian Government, through VicScreen, has officially opened applications for the Victorian Game Development Internship Program for the second year. The paid internship program supports emerging professionals by accelerating the careers of digital game creators from backgrounds traditionally underrepresented in the screen industry.

The internship includes an internship at the world’s leading studio Sledgehammer Games, known for its work on the Obligations series, renowned Victorian independent developer, Robot Circus, and state-owned creative and economic screen development agency VicScreen. All six games on display today were supported by VicScreen through its production fund.

This event comes off a record year for Victoria’s digital games industry, with VicScreen-supported games pumping $9.7 million into the state’s economy, a whopping 46 percent increase from the previous year. Victoria is now home to 57% of Australia’s gaming workforce and over 170 digital game studios.

Melbourne Studio Lumi Interactive’s next female-led game, kinder world is turning heads around the world after receiving a $9.76 million investment from a Silicon Valley venture capital firm. kinder world is a game of houseplants, healing and practicing kindness. Lumi Interactive is calling its genre ‘crowd curation’ and it’s set to help people relax and unwind with its unique and welcoming style.

In 2019 E3 was captivated by the images of the spectacular path to the forest and soundtrack by Aivi & Surasshu, American animated television series composers, Steven Universe. TThe game follows a deer and a fawn who must embark on a journey through an abandoned world of the unknown in order to get home. For the first time today, an exclusive demo was shown.

rebel beach will be the debut game from Melbourne-based creative Ghost Pattern. Wayward Strand is a moving story, told in a curious way on board an air hospital. The cast is fully voiced by beloved Australian actors, including the one with the castle Michael Caton and is combined with impressive images. The amazing game will be released on September 15, 2022.

Wood and Climate by Paper House Studio
A silly game of gods created as a playful lens to observe the effects of climate change in a wooden toy reimagining of Melbourne. Paper House is paving the way for the industry by tracking its environmental cost and making an effort to reduce its impact.

Worth more than $200 billion globally, the digital gaming industry is one of the fastest growing entertainment sectors in the world. locally made games like dumb ways to die and more recently, Untitled Goose Game, have been played by tens of millions of people around the world.

Later this month, Victoria’s games industry will be on display at the world’s largest games industry event, GamesCom in Germany, with Australia headlining the 35-member delegation from Victoria.
