Transportation in Minecraft can be excruciating due to the limited options. But it gets more complicated when you want to travel vertically. To climb up, you need to place various blocks or create items like stairs. And while going down, you have to work hard to avoid fall damage in minecraft, which can kill you instantly. We can’t solve the problem for your entire world, but there is a method to seamlessly travel up and down your Minecraft house or base build. You need to learn how to make a water riser in Minecraft, and we’re here to teach you just that. It is one of the most reliable single investments that can help you significantly in the long run. With that said, let’s get to work!
Make a water elevator in Minecraft (2022)
Our step-by-step tutorial to make a water riser work in Minecraft Java and Bedrock editions. We tested the water riser in the latest Minecraft 1.19 update. But before we get to the main process, we’ll first cover how the elevator actually works. However, you can jump right into the process using the table below.
How does a water lift work?
Many blocks in Minecraft are known to create fizzy bubbles in the game’s water fountain blocks. Depending on the flow of your current, these bubbles can move entities within the water. So if an entity enters a bubbling stream going up, the entity will automatically go up with the stream. The same rules also apply to downdrafts.
The water riser in Minecraft works with this mechanic at its core. But since a single stream can’t move two ways, you have to create two separate water risers: one to go up and one to go down.
Elements needed to make a water elevator
You need the following items to make a water riser in Minecraft:
- two buckets of water
- a stack of Kelp
- solid blocks for construction (preferably Glass or Stained Glass)
- four wooden doors
- Sand of souls block
- Magma block
You can get any solid building block to make your elevator exit, but most players use glass blocks for aesthetic purposes. Others prefer cobblestone because it is readily available. You can use any solid block that suits your preferences. The number of blocks will depend on the height of your lift. That said, let’s see how you can get the elements of this list:
get buckets of water
Since we are doing two lifts at a time, you need two main sources of water. For that, you need to create buckets of water and use them in a river, lake or ocean to collect water. You simply need to equip the bucket and click on a water source to pick it up.
Get Kelp in Minecraft
The bubble is broadcast only in Minecraft work with water source blocks. So for each floor of your water riser, you need a separate source of the water block. But before you run out and collect loads of buckets of water, there’s an easy way to turn flowing water into fountain blocks.
Placing seaweed in flowing water turns that water into a water fountain block. For that, you need to find seaweed, a common plant that grows in all Minecraft oceans. Seaweed chunks are easy to collect, as breaking each plant throws out dozens of seaweed at once.
Make a wooden front door
Doors are essential to prevent water from leaving the water riser in Minecraft. You can lay wooden planks on a workbench, as shown in the recipe above, to make doors.
Collect soul sand and magma block
The magma blocks cause the entities to flow down with the current of bubbles. Meanwhile, the soul sand makes the entities and bubbles float up. Both blocks are commonly generated in the bottom dimension of Minecraft. You can create a Nether portal to travel to this dimension and find blocks of sand and soul magma.
Alternatively, you can also find magma blocks on the surface of Minecraft oceans. But since you are already going to make a trip to the Nether, it is better to get soul sand and magma blocks from there.
Steps to Make an Elevator in Minecraft
Follow the steps below to make a water riser up or down in Minecraft:
- First, create three crystal towers (or any other solid block) around a single block, leaving its fourth side empty. These glass towers should be as tall as you want your elevator to be.
2. Then, at the place of the fourth tower, create a small door-like structure (see image below) and add a gate at the entrance to keep water inside the elevator.
3. To finish the structure of the water riser in Minecraft, create the fourth tower just above the door.
4. Now that the “elevator” part of the water riser is complete, it’s time to add water. For that, go to the top of the structure and use the water bucket to place a water block inside the elevator. It will automatically go down to the bottom of the elevator.
5. Next, you need to put seaweed inside the riser to turn the flowing water into water fountain blocks. start from the bottom and create a tower of algae placing one piece of seaweed on top of another.
6. Finally, break off the bottommost piece of seaweed to cause the entire algae structure to collapse, leaving behind independent blocks of water sources.
How to use the minecraft water elevator
With everything in place, you simply need to place a block of magma or soul sand at the bottom for the elevator to work. This is how you do it:
Create elevator up (soul sand)
If you place a soul sand block at the bottom of the water riser in Minecraft, a upflow of bubbles. Any entity including players, mobs, and items that enter the flow of bubbles will be immediately pushed to the top of the water riser. Once at the top you can exit the water flow and climb onto the upper glass block. You can also choose to create a platform on top to make your landing smoother and navigation easier.
Create lift down (Magma)
To reverse the flow of bubbles, you have to place a magma block at the bottom of the water riser in Minecraft. It’s throw the water down, and the entities in the water flow towards itself. You can keep changing the blocks at the bottom to change the functionality of your lift, but we suggest making two separate lifts.
Do double lifts
If you don’t want two separate elevators, you can also expand a single elevator to include two water channels. To do that, you need to make your water riser two blocks wide. Then place a magma block and a soul sand block on its bottom. You can jump to the magma bubbles to go down and to the soul sand bubbles to go up.
Uses of the water riser in Minecraft
You can use a water riser in Minecraft for the following purposes:
- To travel vertically around a Minecraft base.
- To transport items and mobs on Minecraft farms.
- To catch mobs or other players in complex streams.
We already have a guide on how to create an XP mob farm in Minecraft. It is the perfect structure to include a water elevator.
What block makes water rise in Minecraft?
Soul Sand causes water to release rising bubbles in Minecraft, allowing you to create an ascending elevator.
Why is my water elevator not working in Minecraft?
If your blocks are placed correctly, the only reason your elevator isn’t working is that the water isn’t a source block. So you need to place and break seaweed to turn the flowing water into water fountain blocks.
Does soul soil work for a water lift?
Only soul sand makes water bubbles rise in minecraft. You cannot use Soul Soil in this build.
What block makes the water go down in Minecraft?
You can use magma blocks to make water bubbles pull you down a water riser in Minecraft.
