All you need to know

Minecraft’s latest update is finally here, and while it may not be as wild as once thought, it still has quite a few new things. Along with Warden, Allay, and Frogs, the update also added two new Minecraft 1.19 biomes.

The Minecraft 1.19 biomes consist of the Deep Dark, the home of the Warden and the easiest source of the new Sculk blocks, and the Mangrove Swamp. While mangrove swamps are about the same, Deep Dark is definitely more than meets the eye.

The latest 1.19 minecraft biomes are packed with new blocks, features, monsters, and lots of utility. Things like wireless Redstone and transforming entire blocks are now possible.

What biomes were added in Minecraft 1.19?

The critically acclaimed “The Wild Update” ended up being a lot less ‘Wild’ than initially planned. Long term players have started calling it and labeling it “The Mild Update”. But is that really the case?

The two new biomes added in the 1.19 update are:

Not really. The update brings with it quite a few new additions to Minecraft, including but not limited to two new biomes.

The deep darkness in Minecraft 1.19

The Deep Dark is Mojang’s latest attempt at a Horror/Dark biome that would make players think twice about entering it. And it seems that it has finally worked.

Deep Dark isn’t just a biome that players need to be careful about venturing into, it’s a biome that even other mobs avoid. Literally other mobs can’t spawn in Deep Dark.

It brings items like Sculk Veins and Sculk Catalysts, and the annoying and persistent Sculk Shriekers that summon the Warden. Deep Darkness is a biome best avoided whenever possible.

What is Sculk in Minecraft 1.19?

After my excessive mention of the different types of Sculk blocks, you are probably wondering what Sculk is. Sculk is one of the new blocks added to Minecraft in the 1.19 biome update.

Sculk’s veins, which spawn exclusively in Deep Dark, are bluish-green in color and have no unique properties, except that it is where Sculk’s sensors spawn. These Sculk Sensors are in turn responsible for activating Sculk Shriekers, who in turn are responsible for summoning the Warden.

In addition to Sculk Shriekers and Sculk Veins, Sculk Catalysts are blocks that, when broken, turn surrounding blocks into Sculk Veins as well.

This makes them the only way, aside from a Silk Touch tool, to spawn Sculk anywhere other than Deep Dark.

Who is The Guardian?

In a nutshell, The Warden is one of three new mobs added to Minecraft and spawns exclusively in one of the Minecraft 1.19 biomes.

Being a natural inhabitant of the Deep Dark, Warden is summoned by Sculk Shriekers and only serves to draw players away from the Deep Dark. He protects the treasures that the Deep Dark hides and protects the Ancient Cities that lie within.

It’s definitely something to be scared of, but here’s a handy guide to make sure you survive meeting it.

What are Ancient Cities?

Ancient cities are new structures that were added as part of the Minecraft 1.19 biome update.

Spawning exclusively in Deep Dark, these structures are built entirely from a block called “Reinforced Deepslate” (which is currently unobtainable in Survival Minecraft). They are also known to have the same anti-mafia generation properties as Deep Dark.

On a more rewarding note, these Ancient Cities hide the new Swift Sneaking enchantment within them. (Obviously they are protected by Sculk Shriekers and sensors that will call the Guardian as soon as they detect it.)

Oh, and also, if you go through enough chests in an Ancient City, you might end up finding a fragment of a music record. And if you are lucky enough to find 9 shards, you can use them to create Music Disk 5.

But maybe you’ve had enough of Deep Dark and want a change of scenery. Don’t worry, just trudge into the newly added mangrove swamps.

Mangrove swamps in Minecraft 1.19

This ‘new’ biome serves as a rehash of the original swamp biome, but with a slight twist. With its generally browner color tone, and the addition of frogs that spawn primarily in swamps, Mangrove Swamp is Minecraft’s new slimy, slippery biome.

How are mangrove swamps different?

Mangrove swamps differ from normal swamps in that they are defined by the mangrove trees that populate them.

While paddling through a river in a mangrove swamp, players will come across water-soaked leaves and mangrove roots, both of which are new additions to the Minecraft 1.19 Biomes update. Players can break water-soaked leaves to produce water fountain blocks.

What are frogs in Minecraft 1.19?

In the same way that Deep Dark introduced us to Warden, Mangrove Forests introduced us to Frogs.

Frogs are a passive mob that were added to Minecraft in the 1.19 update. They are best known for dropping Froglight blocks when they eat Magma Cubes. It’s okay if you’re confused. Feel free to check out our complete guide to frogs here.

How to remove mud from a swamp?

Mud is generated in mangrove swamps rather than on land and can be found from the surface to where stone begins to be generated.

While mud cannot be broken up and scooped up the same way as dirt, it can be done by using a water bottle on a dirt block. The mud can then be turned into Packed Mud. Or alternatively, leave it on top of a block with a stalactite stone to turn it into clay.

Other features:

The Allay and the new Chest Boat are two other widespread additions to Minecraft in the 1.19 update that don’t entirely count as biome-specific.

  • The Allay is a friendly passive mob that loves to bring you items when you give them something you want. I know it sounds a bit broken. Check the complete guide here.
  • The chest ship can be crafted and is pretty much the same as a chest Minecart. The only difference is that this one goes over water and will probably be useful in the wider rivers of the mangrove forest.

conclusion

Deep Dark and Mangrove Forests are now in Minecraft. And while finding them can be a bit tricky, they are definitely worth a visit.
