Seagrass is a non-solid block of plants that you can harvest to use as compost or to raise turtles. You can also grow seagrass yourself if you have the right materials. As you will read, there are also some unique uses for Seagrass in Minecraft, not limited to decorative purposes!

How to Get Minecraft Sea Grass

You can only harvest seagrasses with scissors, and simply breaking seagrasses will not bring them back to your inventory.

To craft scissors, you need two iron ingots that you place on a workbench, and you can then use them to harvest seagrass from blocks. You can get two seagrasses if you harvest tall seagrasses instead of just one.

If you try to harvest seagrass without scissors, the seagrass will simply disappear.

You can also get seagrass as loot from turtles. If you kill a turtle, you can get up to two Seagrass from them. However, we don’t know why you would want to kill one of these adorable creatures.

Where to find sea grass

You can find seagrasses in ocean biomes, usually near kelp. It also appears in swamps, underwater caves, and rivers. It very rarely appears on gravel surfaces, but it does happen occasionally.

Seagrass is resistant to lava, so if lava floats on top of water, seagrass will be fine. However, if you go to a frozen ocean, you won’t be able to find seagrass.

Seagrass Farming in Minecraft

Seagrass is essential to any rustic natural water-based build. Perhaps you are building a nice pond for your base garden, or filling the bottom of a ravine with a natural aquatic environment. You definitely want Seagrass.

The easiest method to get plenty of seagrass wherever you want is to simply grow it with bone meal. In Java Edition, all you need to do is use Bone Meal on a non-transparent block that is underwater. In Bedrock Edition, however, it must be Dirt, Coarse Dirt, Gravel, Clay, Sand, or Red Sand. You still just use Bone Meal on any of those blocks to farm Seagrass.

If you’ve harvested Seagrass with scissors, you can simply drop it back onto your underwater blocks, wherever you like. This would be the preferred method if you want to meticulously place your Seagrass in specific areas, while the latter will give it a more natural, messy look.

Uses of Sea Grass in Minecraft

If you go to a beach where you see turtles, pull out seagrass and offer it. You must keep it within ten blocks of them, and they will follow you. Feed it to two turtles, and they will go into Love Mode, after which one of them will lay Turtle Eggs.

If you have a composter, you can place your seagrass in it to give you a 30% chance of increasing your compost level by one. If you don’t have a composter, you can make them using eight slabs of wood, or you can find them in any town.

As mentioned, Seagrass is a wonderful addition to any rustic water-based build. Maybe an old unused swimming pool, a cottage pond, or a turtle bay. All of these could benefit greatly from the addition of some seagrasses, both normal and tall, scattered around the area. Add seaweed and water lilies to liven up your water area, and a mix of dirt, gravel, andesite, and cobblestone.

Related to the above, when adding Seagrass to your build area, if you apply bone meal to your seagrass it will transform into tall seagrass if you have enough space. If you don’t have enough room on top, you’ll have wasted your bonemeal, as your seagrass will remain.

Shields are an item that baby turtles drop when they mature into adult turtles. They are used to make Turtle Shell helmets. If you want to speed up the aging process of your baby turtles, you can feed them seagrass!
