Minecraft Ancient City Portal: Top Speculations and Rumors of New Dimensions!

Imagine having a mob stronger than the Ender Dragon and Wither in Minecraft, only to have it drop a sculk block upon death. Feels pretty weird, doesn’t it? Well, it gets worse. The mob we’re talking about is the Guardian from Minecraft update 1.19, and it drops a sculk catalyst, which you can find and mine in the Deep Dark biome anyway using the silk-touch enchantment. Something smells like fish, right? Thats not all. The place where the Warden appears is the same place as the portal of the old city in Minecraft 1.19. At least that’s what the community feels that structure is. Now, to put all the rumors and theories to rest, we’re here to find out all about Minecraft’s old town portal and the likely addition of a new dimension.

Ancient City Portal: new dimension, new boss and release date (2022)

Our guide reviews various sources and speculations about the portal-like structure in the ancient city. In doing so, we also debunk rumors that make no sense or are simply unreliable. You can use the table below to read the theories that interest you the most.

Note: This article is speculative and covers possible ideas that could lead to an ancient city portal. The developers have not yet confirmed any speculation.

Is there a portal in the ancient city?

The ancient city that spawns deep in the dark Minecraft biome has multiple smaller structures. Some of the structures look like temples, while others include corridors, ruined structures, and portals. But what most attracts the attention of Minecraft players is the huge hollow structure that looks like a portal and a window in the center of the ancient city.

Also, the window area of this structure is formed by reinforced solid slate ashlars. Just like the blocks that make up the End portal in the game, you cannot mine and get the Reinforced Deep Slate Blocks. If you try to break the block, it will take over 80 seconds, which will make it 10 times stronger than the strongest block in the game, i.e. Obsidian. Following the trend, obsidian is also a portal block, which you can use to make the Nether portal in Minecraft. Portal or not, these properties definitely point towards a broader purpose of reinforced slate blocks.

Portal of the ancient city of Minecraft: speculations

Reference to portal in snapshots

the Minecraft Snapshot 22W13A it was the first beta release that brought the ancient cities to the game. Interestingly, the ancient city in that snapshot also had a miniature version of the downtown structure. It was the exact replica of this structure, only much smaller in size.

The most suspicious part of this release was that the game officially called the structure “little portal statue”, indicating that the larger structure is a portal of some kind. But before we started looking for hints of this in the official 1.19 update, the name of this structure was changed in subsequent snapshots.

Music Disc 5: Mysterious Sounds!?

Almost all music discs in Minecraft are made up of sounds from the game or music in general. But the new Music Disc 5 added in the Minecraft 1.19 update is slightly different. It starts with the sound of static. Then you can hear the sound of someone walking, blocks breaking, the Guardian and whispers in quick succession. These sounds are followed by a loud metallic click, which sounds similar to the flint and steel used to light up the Nether portal in Minecraft.

After that, you can hear shrieks, metallic footsteps, and a fading sound of music. Things seem to calm down after that as soft music plays in your ears, but it stops abruptly and what follows is a bunch of terrifying noises, including heavy footsteps, and escalating into monstrous screams before the record stops. You can listen to music disc 5 in Minecraft 1.19 right here:

The most suspicious sounds on the disc can be heard at seconds 12 and 13 of the audio clip. What you hear sounds like flint and steel lighting a fire (possibly soul fire, more on that below) followed by a Minecraft portal opening (possibly the one in the Old City). But until the developers reveal the story or concept behind this disc, the mystery will remain. Do not forget, the The official name of the music disc 5 is “Otherside”. which only adds to the portal theories.

According to some speculation, instead of a portal to another world, this music disc sounds like an entrance that leads to a monstrous boss in our world. And seeing the side of the portal, I surely don’t want to know what can come out of it.

Warden Mob is a guard

The term “warden” literally means “guard” or “protector”. So it would make sense that the presence of the newly added Mafia Guardian in the Old City means that he is there to protect something. To be fair, the loot in the Old City is staggering. But Warden is not a boss mobs and still stronger than existing boss mobs in the game. Such power is not justified by the kind of loot you find in these cities.

Guardian in Minecraft

Also, as mentioned above, if you defeat the Guardian, the mob just drop catalyst sculk, which is one of the many types of sculk blocks in Minecraft 1.19. However, you can easily get the sculk blocks with the silken touch enchantment. So yeah, at the end of the day, killing the Guardian feels pointless.

But if Warden drops something interesting like a portal opener in the future, his presence would certainly fit better within the game.

The dimension of the ether

Brandon Pearce aka Reybdoz, is a popular Minecraft game developer on Mojang. But before joining his team in 2020, he was the face behind the popular Aether mod. This mod added a new dimension to the game. And it got so famous that people started trying to create an aether portal even in the base game, assuming it was a real feature.

So if the developer plans to use Pearce’s skills in mod development, a dimension could definitely be on the cards and would make more sense. However, it is worth noting that even he has not said anything about the new update. But the mysterious tweets from him keep coming.

Will we get a new dimension in the Minecraft 1.20 update?

The last time the Minecraft developer officially spoke about a new dimension, it stated that it would first improve existing biomes and dimensions in the game. With revamped biomes finally coming to the game, we don’t think the chances of a new dimension are high in the Minecraft 1.20 update. But you can use our linked guide to find other speculated features that could actually be included in the game.

However, once the biome renovations are complete, the only thing that would make sense would be to add a new dimension to the game. It will allow developers to bring entirely new mechanics to Minecraft, similar to flying Elytra from the Final dimension. And if we’re lucky, this new update should be here in Minecraft 1.21 or 1.22 next year.
